The Experience
Some events are designed around dinner.
Others are designed entirely around energy.
This cocktail party in La Jolla—created alongside the team at Marcy Blum Events—was very much the second kind.
Hosted at a private residence overlooking the coast, the evening unfolded less like a traditional birthday party and more like an immersive late-night experience. Guests moved through different spaces of the home with cocktails in hand, stopping for roaming caviar service, interactive desserts, tray-passed late-night bites, and gluten-free pizzas fired throughout the night.
It was playful. Elevated. A little indulgent.
Exactly the kind of event that reminds me hospitality doesn’t always have to follow the rules.
Building a Luxury Cocktail Party Around Movement
One of the things I’ve always admired about working with the Marcy Blum team is their understanding of flow.
The best parties don’t keep people in one place.
They invite movement.
Conversation shifts rooms. Guests discover something unexpected around the corner. The energy evolves naturally throughout the evening.
For this event, every food moment was intentionally designed to support that rhythm.
Desserts were both stationed and tray-passed, allowing guests to interact with the experience rather than stop for a formal course.
Late-night bites arrived later in the evening just as the party shifted gears:
- In-N-Out inspired sliders with truffle fries
- Lemongrass ginger ahi tacos
- Brie and aged cheddar “Sexy Mac n Cheese”
Luxury Doesn’t Have to Feel Stuffy
That’s something we think about often at Chef Joann & Co.
Luxury hospitality isn’t about making things feel overly formal. Sometimes it looks like rose gold spoons and pistachio crème brûlée torched in front of guests. Other times it looks like sliders served in custom branded burger boxes at midnight.
The magic is in the contrast. This event leaned fully into that balance—high-touch presentation layered with playful nostalgia and interactive moments throughout the night.
Even the pizza station became part of the experience, with personal gluten-free pizzas served in custom mini pizza boxes from a live oven setup in the backyard.
Because the best parties rarely feel too polished, they feel ALIVE.
A Fully Gluten-Free Menu Without Compromise
One of the details I loved most about this event was that the entire menu was gluten-free and prepared in a dedicated gluten-free kitchen. And honestly, most guests probably never realized it. That’s always the goal for us.
To create menus that are inclusive and accommodating without making anyone feel like they’re missing out on the experience.
From tiramisu towers in coupe glasses to caviar bumps, crème brûlée, tacos, pizza, and late-night comfort food, every dish was designed to feel indulgent first. The dietary considerations simply became part of the hospitality behind the scenes.
That level of care matters—especially at events where guests should feel relaxed enough to simply enjoy themselves.
Why We Love Events Like This
There’s something really special about parties that don’t take themselves too seriously while still being executed at a very high level.
A roaming caviar bump can exist alongside truffle fries. A martini fountain can coexist with handmade gluten-free desserts.
That contrast is where personality lives. And for us, those are always the most memorable events to create.
